Despite its Jewish branding and ritual elements, the Jewish Marriage Encounter (J.M.E.) weekend program fundamentally misaligns with authentic Jewish theological principles. Through participant observation as both a Conservative rabbi and attendee, this ethnographic analysis reveals how J.M.E.'s core philosophy stems from classical Christian theology rather than Jewish thought. The program's superficial incorporation of Jewish practices like hamotzi, birkat hamazon, and shaharit services masks deeper theological inconsistencies, including problematic concepts of "original sin" in marriage, divine-spousal equivalencies through love-centered theology, and suffering-servant motifs characteristic of Christian soteriology. The investigation uncovers a guilt-based counseling approach and rigid institutional control that contradict Jewish values. These findings demonstrate J.M.E.'s inadequate adaptation of Catholic Marriage Encounter principles and failure to develop authentically Jewish approaches to marital enrichment. Substantial theological restructuring and proper rabbinic consultation are essential to align such programs with Jewish tradition and values.
