American rabbis across Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform movements are experiencing a professional crisis marked by frequent job changes and deep career dissatisfaction. Through group therapy sessions at psychiatric institutions in two eastern cities, rabbis revealed how the intellectual uncertainties of American Jewish life, congregational ambivalence toward Judaism, and the clash between religious ideals and institutional demands fuel their professional restlessness. The research, conducted under psychiatric supervision, uncovered that this restlessness stems not only from external pressures but also from unresolved personal psychological issues. Many rabbis operate as "problem-centered" rather than "person-centered" professionals, unconsciously projecting their own psychological patterns onto congregational relationships. This dynamic significantly impacts their pastoral effectiveness and contributes to professional isolation. Perhaps most concerning is the widespread retreat from traditional rabbinic scholarship, as contemporary rabbis increasingly abandon study and learning in favor of purely functional roles. The findings suggest that addressing rabbinic restlessness requires honest self-examination and resolution of personal psychological conflicts—only through achieving inner peace can rabbis effectively serve their congregations and contribute to a more authentic American Jewish religious community.
