Religious tradition, not ethnic or cultural ties, forms the essential bond connecting Jews worldwide - a reality illuminated by Israel's historic "ingathering of exiles." When diverse Jewish populations converged in the newly established state of Israel, their unity transcended racial and national boundaries, anchored instead in shared religious heritage. Through analysis of contemporary religious leadership responses to practical challenges in Israeli society - from Sabbath observance in essential services to military obligations and diplomatic functions - this research reveals critical tensions between traditional Judaism and modern statehood. The Orthodox rabbinate's reliance on legalistic accommodations and exemptions has inadvertently diminished Judaism's relevance for Israeli youth and secular society. While sacred tradition faces both negative and affirmative challenges in Israel, the latter, though less obvious, may generate valuable new perspectives. The fate of Jewish fellowship hinges on how religious tradition evolves in both Israel and America, demanding creative theological approaches that can authentically integrate modern state responsibilities with Jewish religious commitment rather than treating them as separate spheres.
