Modern Jewish couples often navigate premarital counseling that neglects crucial psychological and relational preparation, focusing instead on ceremonial details. To address this gap, an innovative Pre-Marriage Encounter program merged traditional Jewish wisdom with contemporary relationship science. Five couples participated in a series of five 1.5-hour sessions led by an interdisciplinary team comprising a rabbi, psychotherapist, and sex education specialist. The program's methodology wove together practical relationship skills—communication training and conflict resolution—with Jewish values, laws, and philosophy. Participants explored wedding ceremony symbolism, examined their communication patterns, discussed sexual attitudes within a halakhic framework, and engaged in values clarification exercises. The Edwards Personality Preference Schedule (EPPS), administered before and after the program, revealed trends toward increased personal openness and stronger partner agreement. Beyond these measurable outcomes, the program catalyzed significant relationship decisions: one couple set their wedding date, while another pursued additional counseling. This integrated approach to Jewish premarital preparation shows particular promise for couples seeking to balance Jewish identity with modern relationship needs, especially those navigating different levels of religious observance.
